Why I chose Valladolid, Yucatan as my digital nomad home?

I fell in love with the Yucatan in 2007 If you’re a digital nomad looking for your next home base in Mexico, let me introduce you to a hidden gem that deserves a spot on your list: Valladolid, Yucatán. It’s a small colonial town in the heart of the peninsula that combines authentic Mexican culture, modern amenities, and a relaxed lifestyle — all at a fraction of the cost of bigger cities.

My name is Justin Young, and I’ve been working remotely since before “remote work” was even a thing. As a computer engineer who’s been online since the dial-up days,

I’ve had the privilege of living and working in different countries. But for the last 17 years, I’ve proudly called the Yucatan my home — and I can say with confidence that it’s one of the best-kept secrets for digital nomads in Mexico.

1. A central location

Valladolid is right in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula, perfectly located about two hours away from three international airportsCancún, Tulum, and Merida.

Whether I need to fly out for a tech conference, a client meeting, or a quick getaway, I have easy access to the rest of the world without living in a hectic city. And when I come back, I get to return to a peaceful colonial town full of charm and history.

2. Safety and peace of mind

One of the things I value most about living here is the sense of safety. I can work in a coffee shop downtown with my laptop open or take client calls from my terrace without worrying about my personal security.

The people in Valladolid are kind, respectful, and community-oriented. As an expat, feeling at ease in your surroundings makes a huge difference in your quality of life — and that’s something you truly get here.

**3. Reliable internet **

When I first moved to Mexico almost two decades ago, finding stable internet outside of major cities was a challenge.

But things have changed dramatically. In Valladolid, I have fast, reliable internet at home, and even the local cafés and coworking spaces offer excellent Wi-Fi. I run code, video calls, and large file transfers daily without any issues.

4. Affordable living and a better quality of life

The cost of living in Mexico allows me to live more intentionally. We own our home, something that would have been almost impossible for us to achieve in other economies.

The lower cost of living also means we can save, invest, and spend more time on what truly matters — like family dinners, weekend trips to the cenotes, or a day exploring nearby Mayan ruins.

Our private medical insurance costs about 300 USD a month for our family of five.

5. A supportive expat community

Valladolid has a small but strong expat community. We look out for one another — whether it’s sharing local tips, organizing events, or helping a newcomer find a good mechanic or a doctor. That sense of belonging and mutual support makes settling in so much easier. Over time, we’ve built not just a network, but real friendships.

**6. Foreigners can own property **

Another major advantage of living in Valladolid is that foreigners can own property directly, without the need for a bank trust (fideicomiso).

Unlike properties near the coast or border zones, Yucatán’s interior allows direct ownership under your name. That makes the process simpler, more secure, and often more affordable — a big plus for anyone planning to settle down or invest long-term.

Valladolid may not be the first place that comes to mind when people think of digital nomad hotspots — but that’s exactly what makes it special. It’s authentic, safe, well-connected, and filled with opportunities to live a balanced, meaningful life.

After all these years, I can’t imagine living anywhere else.
