How to find a real estate agent in Mexico

Why work with a Real Estate agent?

There are many reasons to work with a real estate agent in Mexico: lack of time to look for a home, the need to invest wisely, or to have someone that knows the process of purchasing real estate in Mexico. Therefore, choosing a good real estate agent can be crucial in finding your dream property.

Think of the broker as an advisor that is knowledgeable about the market, the neighborhoods and can help you buy the ideal place for the right budget. Follow our tips and pick a professional real estate agent with confidence!

6 tips to find the perfect agent for you

  1. VISIT THE REALTOR’S OFFICE

This is very important, since anyone can post an ad on the internet, and there are many informal sellers out there. So, it is essential to visit the real estate agent office and know the person you will be trusting with your money, property or investment. This visit can give you the chance to get to know the agent and assess if you can be a good match.

2. CHECK THEIR CREDENTIALS

In many states of Mexico it’s not mandatory to have a license or certification to be a real estate agent, and Yucatán is one of such states. Therefore, it is important not to assume everyone out there is certified. Ask your realtor for their credentials, or you can also check the A.M.P.I. website to look for certified real estate professionals in the area.

A.M.P.I. is the Mexican association of realtors, and they have chapters for each State in Mexico.

3. SHOP AROUND

Explore the websites of local real estate companies and make sure to pick the one with an ample portfolio so you can see as many properties as possible before taking the big step.

4. ASK OTHER EXPATS OR  FOREIGNERS LIVING IN THE AREA

If you happen to know other expats in the area, ask them about the process of purchasing properties in Mexico, as well as recommendations about local realtors.

5. FIND SOMEONE THAT SPEAKS YOUR LANGUAGE

Ideally, your realtor should be able to communicate with you. If you are a foreigner purchasing real estate in Mexico, make sure he/she has experience helping other foreigners like you.

6. SHOP LOCAL

Choose a realtor who lives in the area you’re interested in, so he can give you accurate advice about living in the city. A local realtor can share their knowledge and give you tidbits of information that no one else can!
