El Hanal Pixan (Hanal: Comida) (Pixan: Animas) Comida para las ánimas es el nombre en la lengua Maya de la comida tradicional que se le ofrece a los muertos. Esta celebración se realiza en el estado de Yucatán; en ciudades y pueblos de origen e influencia Maya.
La tradición del Hanal Pixan dura varios dias: inicia el 31 de Octubre conmemorando a los niños fallecidos, el día 1 es para los adultos se cierra el día 2 que para todos los santos.
La creencia popular estipula que las ánimas visitan a sus familiares durante estos días porque son los días que “Tienen permiso”. Las almas de los que ya no están visitan los altares de muertos donde son agasajados con sus comidas y bebidas favoritas.
Esta celebración se lleva a cabo en diferentes lugares del país con diferentes adaptaciones, pero siempre como una forma de celebrar de una manera alegre a nuestros seres queridos que se adelantaron.
El Hanal Pixan es el único ritual maya que seguimos celebrando cada año, y se caracteriza por la preparación del PIB: un tamal de pollo/puerco e ibes que es horneado bajo la tierra con leña.
Algunos de los elementos principales que no deben falta en el altar de Hanal Pixan son:
Mesa: Que es construida a mano, con ramas y es amarrada con ramas.
Incensario: Para que las animas estén las armonizadas, se cree que la comida es consumida de manera espiritual dejando solo la forma física.
Sal y Agua: Estas se ponen en jicaras y su significado tiene que ver con el origen y fin de la vida. Estos elementos tienen además la función de guiar a las almas otra vez camino al otro mundo, de manera que no queden atrapadas en este.
Cruz Verde: Esta es hecha de madera y es conocida como Yaxche, personifica el centro de rotación del cosmos, es el árbol de la vida.
Los altares de los niños suelen ser más coloridos y con juguetes, mientras que el de adultos pueden llevar cigarros y licores.
Instalar y decorar los altares es una celebración en casa, de la que todos los miembros pueden participar. Incluso si es una celebración ajena, cualquiera puede preparar un pequeño altar en casa y ser parte de esta tradición.
Hanal Pixan, the celebration of the Day of the Dead in Yucatan
Hanal Pixan is a Mayan celebration for the day of the dead (Hanal: Food, Pixan: souls). This celebration is held in the state of Yucatan, in cities and towns of Mayan origin and influence.
The Hanal Pixan festivities last several days: it starts on October 31st commemorating the deceased children, the first of November is for adults and finally the 2nd is a celebration for all saints.
The popular belief stipulates that the souls visit their relatives during these days because they are permitted to exit the real of the dead for the day. The souls visit the shrines and enjoy their favorite foods and drinks.
This celebration takes place in different parts of the country with different variations, but it is always a joyful way to remember our loved ones.
Hanal Pixan is the only Mayan ritual that we keep celebrating every year and is characterized by the preparation of PIB: a chicken/pork tamale with beans that is baked under the ground with firewood.
Some of the main elements that should not be missing from Hanal Pixan’s altar are:
Shrine Table: It is built for the occasion is built by hand with branches
Incense: It is believed it harmonizes the spirits, it is believed that the food is consumed in a spiritual way leaving only the physical form.
Salt and Water: These are put in jicaras and their meaning is related with the beginning and end of life. These elements also have the function of guiding the souls again to the other world, so that they are not trapped in it.
Green Cross: This is made of wood and is known as Yaxche, personifies the center of rotation of the cosmos, is the tree of life.
The altars of the children are usually more colorful and with toys, while that of adults can have cigars and liquors.
Installing and decorating the altars is a celebration at home, from which all members can participate. Even if it is an outside celebration, anyone can prepare a small altar at home and be part of this tradition.
